This is the road to creepiness. It's a narrow road, filled with haunts, shadows, and things that might be. Let your imagination be your guide and follow me. *wicked laughter* Okay, maybe not. This blog isn't just about horror. Creepy novels can be sci-fi or futuristic, paranormal, even literature can, on occasion, meet my definition. Everyone knows my all time favorite horror novel is The Haunting of Hill House. However, I am not including it here because I just featured it a few weeks ago. These are my top 3 creepy novels I love to read/re-read. My first one is Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. I was introduced to this novel as a teenager and I must say that it was one of the defining books that expanded my horizons beyond the YA novels of that day. It isn't just about making you feel creepy either, Stranger in a Strange Land takes a deep philosophical look into mankind itself. And it isn't pretty. Robert A. Heinlein was an American science fiction writer and one of the best, at least in my opinion. He was a relatively prolific author with titles such as: Time Enough for Love The Cat Who Walks Through Walls Grumbles from the Grave and many more. Blurb Stranger in a Strange Land is the epic saga of an earthling, Valentine Michael Smith, born and educated on Mars, who arrives on our planet with psi powers—telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, telekinesis, teleportation, pyrolysis, and the ability to take control of the minds of others—and complete innocence regarding the mores of man. After his tutelage under a surrogate-father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a messiah figure. His introduction into Earth society, together with his exceptional abilities, lead Valentine to become many things to many people: freak, scam artist, media commodity, searcher, free-love pioneer, neon evangelist, and martyr. Heinlein won his second Hugo award for this novel, sometimes called Heinlein’s earthly “divine comedy.” Trust me, you'll love this one. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury If you haven't read it, you are missing out. Even if you've seen the movie, you have to read the book. It is creepy, chilling, exciting, and goes great with chocolate. Blurb: A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes -- and the stuff of nightmare. Great novel. Something Wicket This Way Comes has everything you need for a weekend of paranormal horror. Of course, if you haven't time, you can always rent the movie. And yes! I'm sneaking in a new one here. For my paranormal fans, here is Haunting Lia by Shannon Eckrich. Skillfully written, Haunting Lia will capture your attention and not let go. Lia is tough and feisty, a young woman willing to take on the world by herself if need be. She is taken in by a foster family whom she quickly learns to love, and a foster sister, Chelsea, becomes the one person she can confide in. After a journey to Frightland, a haunted house, and a horrific accident, Lia is torn from Chelsea and Aiden appears, a skater dude who will give all to protect Lia. But is he even alive? And what about Bianca, who tries to convince Lia she's killed her father? The story will keep you on the tips of your toes and the book is perfect for the YA reader in your life that is looking for a great Halloween Read. Highly recommended. Blurb: Death is her destiny. But she has other things in mind. Lia Starr’s life isn’t a fairytale. It’s a reality overflowing with scary monsters, death, and betrayal—a past she left behind when she entered her new foster home. Now, with a loving family, a sister she’s always craved, and relief from the gruesome corpses that tormented her as a child, she’s finally content. Until a freak accident changes everything. The monsters are back, and their mission is simple: drag Lia straight to their murky hell. When Aiden, an apparition, appears to Lia, she has hope once again. Because Aiden can cross the veil between the spirit world and the earthly dimension, physically fighting off the monsters and sending them back. With Aiden’s determination to keep her safe and his absorbing blue eyes, Lia can’t help falling in love with him. But who is he, and what does he really want? As Lia and Aiden’s relationship deepens, so does the mystery surrounding him. Once Lia finds out Aiden has traded his soul to save her, she enters the darker dimension, a dimension where nightmares are reality, ready to kick some serious butt. But surrounded by twenty-eight mutilated monsters and a deranged cult leader intent on bringing his dark world to the surface, isn’t what Lia expects. And even worse, she must face her traumatic past in order to destroy them. If she fails, not only will she lose the guy she loves and face certain death, but she will also risk the one thing she can’t afford to lose: her eternal soul. Have a wonderful weekend of reading, playing, haunting, or ghosting. ((00)) (((hugs))) Louann Comments are closed.
