![]() It's Monday, the start of a new week of blogging. However, I didn't feel much like it today. My publisher and some of my favorite author pals are right in the midst of a pretty nasty weather pattern. It isn't all about the hurricane, but also about what it is to meet up with two other systems. A nor'easter coming in from Canada and that lovely little weather anomaly that brought me a couple of nasty twisters last week. This is not a storm to be messed with. I can't imagine what it will be like when all three meet later tonight. A few of my pals have already lost power and are working on battery. Another one is seeing water creep up her street. This little note is to send good wishes and hastening prayers for them and their loved ones. Be safe, my friends. ![]() My next favorite Halloween read is Watchers by Dean Koontz This is a heart-warming tale of a genetically altered dog named Einstein, his human adoptee Travis Cornell, and Nora Debon, a recluse, terrified of expanding her horizons but who eventually finds love. Trying to escape his past, Travis Cornell contemplates his future while walking through the woods. Quite by surprise, he is greeted by a Golden Retriever who insists they leave immediately. The animal's obvious agitation sets off Travis' instincts and they take off, Einstein now secure with his baffled new owner. Over the next few days, Travis comes to realize that the dog he's adopted is different from other animals. It seems that Einstein can think. Nora, a beautiful recluse who was raised by a strict and dour aunt is added to the duo when the dog saves her life. All these things combine to bring Travis out of the well of self-pity in which he's been lost. Then science fiction meets horror and it becomes clear that Einstein has been genetically engineered. But by whom? Enter, The Outsider, another genetically manipulated animal that has escaped from the same lab where Einstein was created. He tracks Einstein with every intention of killing him. The secondary cast is just as well written and described as the main characters including a hit man who is seeking eternal life and two national security agents attempting to ensnare the trio. Einstein and his pals face adventure after adventure, each one more dire than the last. Eventually, the novel ends in a satisfying conclusion which will leave the readers missing their antics and their connection with the characters. The best part of this novel is the way Einstein, Travis, and Nora interact with each other. They explode onto the pages with a life of their own and become people you'd really like to meet. For the animal lover, this is a must read, as the tender emotions emitted through just words on a page is nothing short of remarkable. For the horror fanatic there is enough to keep one enthralled. For the romantic, it will fill your heart with joy. Aside from the Odd Thomas series, this is my favorite novel by Dean Koontz. His ability to bring the book to life is simply enchanting. Watchers is a thought-provoking look at new technology combined with every thrill a reader can imagine. Happy Reading! *hugs* Louann Comments are closed.
