 At 5:45 a.m., I walk into the kitchen and make a pot of coffee. Urgh I spill water on my new wooden floors. Bending over to wipe it up, I yawn, cracking my jaw. After making sure the green light is on, on the coffee maker, I head back to bed and crawl underneath the blankets (and the dogs) to get warm. A sleepy husband asks, "Did you get them?" Mumble...groan... "Get what?" "Happy Valentine's Day." That got the blood rushing in spite of all the drugs they are giving me to slow down my heart. I leap from bed and run into the kitchen. Beautiful red roses await me along with an orange/chocolate treat he knows I love. However, I have a problem. His present is still in the car. Glancing at my feet, bare on wooden floors, I throw caution to the wind. At 23 degrees outside, my feet hit our stoney walk-way and revolt. Ouch, ouch, ouch, I scream as I hit the button on my keyring to open the car door. It's a ways to my driveway and I keep thinking: mountain lion? bear? man-eating deer? Leaping inside the car, I grab the Teddy Bear, the chocolate rose, and the new coffee cup with hearts stenciled around the sides. I was back in the bedroom before he even knew I was gone. "They're beautiful," I say about the roses, handing him my gift. "Damn that coffee cup is cold. What did you do, have it in the freezer?" I shake my head and kiss him. Thinking that's what love is about. Bare feet, freezing weather, and man-eating critters, just to give him a gift that isn't much in terms of money, but is stuffed with love from the heart.
