I love the strange and mysterious and if you do to you will find the Unmuseum to your liking. Found at www.unmuseum.org it is a delightful website filled with the bizarre. I was surprised to learn that American has a Stonehenge. It's 40 miles north of Boston and 25 miles inland from the Atlantic ocean. It is a megalithic enigma call Mystery Hill. The area is filled with low walls, cave-like buildings and tunnels that one archaeologist called a gigantic confusion and childish disorder, cunning and rude naively. It is believed to be an observatory, but one where a sacrificial stone takes center stage. And these people were neat, as in cleanliness because the stone has a gutter around its edge. You can find it here: www.museum.org/mysthill.htm (just copy and paste.) Have you ever heard of a Hoodoo? They are a strange geologic formation in Utah. It is my FAVORITE place to vacation and we are headed back there come spring/summer. The formations were caused by salt. Millions of years ago the land was covered in an ocean. When the ocean evaporated salt was left. Over eons the salt turned into rock and when the rock was exposed to weathering the salt washed away and these magnificent arches and spires were left. If you want to touch antiquity and you can't get to Egypt head to Bryce Canyon in Utah. It will give your wonderment a recharge. I didn't intend for this blog to head into the awesomeness of mystery, but sometimes our soul needs a little lift. I don't know where you find your spirit but I find mine in the strange and mysterious. I enjoy knowing there isn't an answer for everything. I like thinking about the how and why of things and many times I don't want to know when the cause of something is found. I was disappointed when they discovered why the mysterious rocks moved in Death Valley. Thinking of UFOs or whatnot was far more fun that ice melting and thawing. My book Innocent Blood is a mysterious take on the world of drug addiction. Sometimes I think we are given certain challenges in life that make us grow. And sometimes those things don't come with ready made answers. I will never understand why the police department used a Give Me Three and You Go Free policy with drug addicts. The motive is to addict more people so you don't have to go to jail. I think stupidity reigns supreme in our War on Drugs. It is about a group of kids who believe they are on a mission from God and who knows? Maybe they were right. And so mystery abounds. I met a man, an engineer, who could only see facts and figures. There was no wonder, only a problem to be solved and solved it would be if he had anything to say about it. I asked him if he believed in God. He said, "Only when they find proof He or She exists." I asked, "But don't you ever wonder?" His brow veed. "Never. Facts and figures are the only things that matter." I am old enough now to understand that to take the conversation further would be a waste of time. I think engineers are born to solve problems and not to wonder, but even at that, to miss experiencing that feeling would be worse than death, at least in my opinion. I know people like to donate to their favorite charity during the holidays, but maybe for this one season, you might throw a little bit at Celebrate Recovery. These people change lives.
