Review Update End of Days
I tried re-reading End of Days, thinking that with all the news in today's headlines, perhaps I would see the novel through different eyes. However, nothing changed except one thing: this might have been a great read if only someone would have taken the time to edit it. Seeing war from nuclear bomb's eyes could have been an intense philosophic statement but it wasn't. Instead, we have a book full of errors, which is something that most books have these days and a bland and at times foolish characters filled with unbelievable angst. Original Review Rats talk and nukes philosophize, an unusual way to write a novel. The characters are three dimensional and while the writing is good, it is confusing with numerous short chapters and head-hopping on a regular basis. In addition... End of Days is just plain disturbing on many levels. Filled with a mishmash of idiotic thought accompanied by violence, torture, and sadism, the book set off my yuck alert just a few pages in. You have a reporter, a media mogul who is the reporter's mother, an ex-boyfriend, three former baseball players one of whom is in jail for murder, another is an officer in the military, and the third is on his way to the space station to visit a neural-net computer capable of thought and communication. The proliferation of nukes out of Russia is America's fault because we didn't buy them back when the Soviet Union collapsed. The rise of Islamic fundamentalism is our fault because of our capitalist greed. The writer goes on to explain that nuclear terrorism is the only way to bring man back to his/her perfect nomadic existence, and that women should be shrouded in burkas because without it, men would be ruled by women. Let us not forget that among the main characters are nuclear weapons that lust for man's annihilation and their passion for things such as shopping, Elvis, and Beverly Hills. And heaven help us, a talking rat that 'saves' the reporter for letting him loose from a experimental lab. The most disturbing element is the proliferation of nuclear material from Russia and the sale of said material to third world and Islamic countries. The writer pontificates that America is the true villain because we sought to control nuclear weapons. We did this by giving them to every country capable of building atomic bombs. Though our capitalistic greed, American as assured itself of a nuclear holocaust. Comments are closed.
