Egh, editing. Consternation, villification, angst.
What to cut and what to keep is the writers' bane. I overwrite because there is so much I want to say then I have to make cuts in order to make my writing more coherant and to the point. I'm not alone. Writers by their very nature are verbose. Many of us say things much better when it's written down vs having to verbalize the same thing in person. When I have difficulty getting a point across I write it out, edit and re-edit it, then hand it off to the person I am trying to move with my thought and opinion. It's a bit like painting a picture. Writers want all the shades of green, yellow, and red captured and understood. Ayn Rand comes to mind. Now she was verbose, but her words paint a canvas unlike any other. An atheist by nature, Ayn, in my opinion, supports the existence of God by her talent alone. Quote: "I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; and I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows." End quote. In this day and age it sometimes it feels as if reason has been lost. Common sense, that personality quirk dictating an intelligent mind, hides behind a correctness that at times seems insurmountable and of a rote presumably enforced by the education of our youth. Here are a few more of her quotes that challenge the mind to think for itself: A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others. A desire presupposes the possibility of action to achieve it; action presupposes a goal which is worth achieving. Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves - or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men. Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong. Do not ever say that the desire to "do good" by force is a good motive. Neither power-lust nor stupidity are good motives. Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice. Evil requires the sanction of the victim. Government "help" to business is just as disastrous as government persecution... the only way a government can be of service to national prosperity is by keeping its hands off. Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one's values. I don't build in order to have clients. I have clients in order to build. So there you go. I need readers in order to write or maybe not. Maybe I get as much pleasure from what I have to say, as to how I say it, as long as it's written down. 10/24/2010 07:07:00 pm
