Introducing Sallie Lundy-Frommer, author of Yesterday's Daughter

I met Sallie on Goodreads. I begged her for a review on A Shadow of Time when she told me she wasn't doing reviews right now because she was working on the sequel to her first book, Yesterday's Daughter. First off, the title intrigued me, secondly, I LOVED the cover. And then, I discovered the genre was one I like to read.

Since I'm leaving for Disneyland tomorrow, I had to find a subject I could leave up for a week. (I'm really taking a vacation.) Sallie's book was just what I was looking for. In addition, Sallie has a background rich enough to inspire as many books as she chooses to write.

Welcome, Sallie. Glad to have you on my blog!  Tell us about your life, where you live, why you write, and lastly who was your inspiration.

Whoa, that’s a lot to be asked in one question. (*Laugh*) Let’s see my life, where do I start?

I went to elementary school in, oh you didn’t want that much information. (*Smile*) Okay, I’ll get serious now. I grew up in a huge family. Nowadays, the average American family is 2.6. And no, I don’t know what that .6  is. But, I’m the youngest of ten children. I have six brothers and three sisters.

In the rural south, large families used to be common because lots of children were needed to work the farm and because they didn’t have access to birth control. Is that too much information? (*Grin*)Anyway, when I was four years old, my family, that is my mother and we young ones (those of still at home) were moved to the urban northeast by one of my brothers. We moved away from the cotton fields and brutal, labored existence. 

If  we hadn’t moved from the south, I have no idea who I would have become. Back then, especially among the poor, on farms working the crops was more important than education. Fast forward to today, a bunch of school, several jobs and a decade or two later and viola, here I am. I’m an author. And as for why I write, I don’t want to sound cliché. But, I wrote “Yesterday’s Daughter” because the story was in me, just hankering to get out. Yes, you can ignore the push to write. I did for years because I didn’t think of myself as a writer.

As for inspiration, I wish I had some wonderful story to tell of how I was inspired to write “Yesterday’s Daughter.” But, I don’t. (*laughing*) There was no conscious inspiration. The source of my inspiration is in my subconscious, and  that’s a whole other story….:-)

Are  you self-published, indie-published, or traditionally published? Why did you go that route?

I’m  a self-published indie author….:) I know there’s all kinds of debates and comparisons about “self” and “indie” publishing. I might be wrong as two left shoes (It’s an old southern expression..:-), but I consider them the same. As for why I took this avenue, I didn’t pitch to many traditional publishers. One might have a better chance of being struck by lightning than being picked up by one of the traditional publishers. I don’t have that kind patience. I worked hard on my story and I wanted to be published sooner rather than later or never. So, I self-published.


What is the best thing you’ve experienced being a published author? What is the worst?


As  for the best thing I’ve experienced since being published writer, I’d have to say it’s a wonderful experience and I have a terrific feeling of unexpected accomplishment. There haven’t been any bad experiences, just those I learn from.


What is the name of your book and what is it about? Are you writing a sequel?


The name of my book is “Yesterday’s Daughter.” It’s a story about searches, a search for identity, a search for the truth and a search for a life mate. Grace is alone and lonely, an escapee from the foster care system and its abuses. In the years since making her escape, Grace has made a life for herself that is little more than existence. She can’t have any real friends. No one can get close to her or they would notice her peculiarities. She must keep her strange behavior secret to stay safe. If anyone knew she drank blood or was allergic to sunlight she’d end up locked up. Grace doesn’t know how or why she is the way she is, she only knows her differences began in puberty. And then there’s Malachi who has been searching for his life mate for decades even though she is believed to have gone into the Void. Nevertheless, Malachi searches on, alone in his belief and determination to find the one woman born with whom he’s to share his near immortal existence.


And yes, I’m working on a sequel. There’s so much more to tell, adventures to share about the world and the characters of “Yesterday’s Daughter.”


What is your favorite line in current release or WIP? Why?


This  is a hard one, favorite line, hmmm? I have more than one favorite. But the line I will share with you is said by Malachi to Grace.


 “I  have been searching for you all my adult life and at many times feared you had gone in the Void. But I did not give up; I could not stop searching for you. In my soul, I knew you still lived.”

That's beautiful.

 I  love this line because it’s passionately powerful. It dramatically showcases his devotion to her.


What are you reading right now?


I’m reading “The Time Weaver” by Thomas A. Knight and Nalini Singh’s, “Bonds of  Justice.”


Who are your favorite authors?


Some  of my favorite authors are J. R. Ward, Jean Auel, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen,  Christine Feehan, Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle, Jeaniene Frost, Dee Henderson, Larry McMurthry, Nalini Singh, George Shuman and Jhumpa Lahiri.


Who  designed the cover of your  novel?


Createspace rocks!! They asked if I had a drawing or picture I could provide them to aid in the design of the cover. But I didn’t have any. But Sapphira was so clear to me, vibrant. If I’d passed her on the sidewalk, I’d have known her. So, I gave them a list of attributes, eye, hair, skin color, facial expression and such. They nailed it on the second attempt. OMG, did they nail it. It’s like she walked out of my dreams.


What do you think makes a good story?


Relatable characters are a must for a good story. Good stories need characters with whom the reader can become emotionally invested. If readers don’t care about the characters, they’re not going to finish the book. This emotional attachment draws them in and then you sustain their interest with action and suspense.


What do you do when you aren't writing?


I  love traveling, although I haven’t done much of it lately. I’m unemployed so for the most part, I spend my time job hunting…L But when I’m not hunting, I’m usually gardening or reading a book for review. I’ve been doing a lot of that, writing reviews. However, when I finish reviewing the books I’ve agreed to, I won’t be accepting any more review requests for a while. I need to devote more time to writing the sequel to Yesterday’s Daughter.

If you were deserted on an island, who are three famous people you would want with you?


Well, if I’m gonna be on a deserted island then I need some sturdy men to help me or I’ll be toast very quickly. So to answer your question, if I had to be on a deserted island with three famous people they would be:


Shemar Moore and Dwayne Johnson because I’ need strong guys who can build stuff, huts or something to help with survival. And the third person, hmmm, Dolph Lundgren because he’s seriously smart and most people don’t know that. Maybe he can figure out a way to escape the island.


Where is one place in the world that you would really love to visit someday?


There are lots of places I’d like to go….:). But my empty wallet is a deterrent (*laughing*). But if I hit lotto I’ll be visiting Australia, China, New Zealand,  Hawaii, Easter Island, The Galapagos, Bora Bora….And I could go on..:)

I  have more than one favorite. But this is in my top ten.

Depends, in the summer I love pink lemonade. When it’s cold out, I like hot chocolate and
apple spice tea.


What would I find in your refrigerator right now?


Organic  milk, lots of salad fixings, and some pasta to name a few things. Now what I like to have in my refrigerator is chocolate ice cream, lasagna, fried  chicken….okay, I'll stop there…


What was the last movie you went to see?


Prometheus, didn’t like it…:/(


If  you were a type of food, what type of food would you be?


Pizza!!!  Oh Yeah!!!
