We are still waiting on two tests, but after an ER visit today the verdict is glaucoma. It may be proper to capitalize the g but I refuse to give it that much importance.
Glaucoma is worse in dogs than in humans and the pain involved is much greater. We have more medications to add to our growing arsenal, but the bottom line is the vet wants to remove her eye and then the other one when the swelling becomes uncontrollable. I didn't even know dogs got glaucoma, but if you find yourself in this situation you can walk with me through this experience so you're not taken by surprise like I was. Right now we have pain medication, anti-pressure drops, antibiotics, anti inflammation pills and drops AND emergency OMG what do I do now stuff to dehydrate her in the event her eye gets too swollen. We see the vet on Tuesday to decide whether or not to have her eye removed and the lid sewn shut, have a prothesis inserted or wait a little longer to see if a miracle happens. This little lost angel needs a lot of love so if you have some to spare send it her way. As you can tell we adore our pet family. Animals are so awesome to know. I hope the experience happens to you someday.

Thank you Mary. Her other eye looks really bad this morning. I am just stunned at how fast this happened.

This disease is very sad. Our three year old lab was just diagnosed two days ago. It happened all too fast. After the visit to the vet on Wednesday we saw a specialist who confirmed primary glaucoma. Her left eye currently has no vision but there is a chance she could regain some. If this eye doesn't spike in the next few weeks it may begin to heal & possibly regain some vision. We are praying for this outcome so that we can opt for the lazer surgery. Although this does not solve the problem it does give us a little hope. We also understand that her other eye is affected. Its all so new for us too, cant believe this is happening to our sweet dog.

Oh, I know how you feel. I am just heart broken. I love my baby girl. And it was way too fast. Fine one day and blind the next. I will be doing a follow up blog when I can stop crying. We just picked her up from the vet minus one eye. I keep second guessing myself. What did we miss? How did this happen so fast?

My heart goes out to you. From my understanding the signs aren't something that are necessarily obvious. Mine did itch her eyes but she has allergies so I didn't find that unusual. I've been reading all I can about it but there isnt anything uplifting. My family says to stop thinking the worst but honestly I havent found a successful outcome, they are all the same.

The specialist said 8-18 months for her semi-good eye. And you are right. There are no good our comes, but a friend of mine put me in touch with a lady who has a blind dog that is doing well and that gave me some encouragement. (((hugs))) Comments are closed.
