I am finalizing the cover for The Light and the Flame and I'm thinking there won't be time for a cover reveal as CMP wants to release the second book in the Gemini series ASAP. When I got the nod yesterday, my stomach fell to my feet. You'd think I'd be used to this now, but for whatever reason, the idea of seeing my book in print for anyone to read is overwhelming. I wondered if all novelists think the same so I polled a few for their opinion. 98% felt the same way I do and 2% said they just don't care anymore, that by the time their book came out they were sick of seeing it, reading it, and marketing it. I can't say I'm sick of it. At least not yet. It is hard to put yourself out there, but it's a must if you want to keep writing. On top of that, my characters become like family. I think of them separately and I appreciate their individuality and it hurts when others criticize them. Take Kate for example. She's been through hell. She married an archaeologist who spends his life trying to control her, yet it is only years into their marriage that Kate finally gets the situation. Then, a comet sweeps by, upending Earth. Kate and her son, Ryan, are taken aboard an alien ship for protection, where Kate falls in love with the captain. It is Kate's destiny to return to Earth as the recorder, one of the chosen to record the last days of Earth. When she is sent back to an inhospitable Earth, she discovers she's pregnant. And that's before she discovers her son, Ryan, is a healer, talents given to him by Noah, the alien sent from Naresh to save the people of Earth. Excerpt “Kate.” Careen nudged her elbow. “Go ahead and take a look.” She opened an eye. One leg, two legs, two arms, and, oh, God, a head. She reached for her baby. Jason supported her in his arms as she took the child. He carried her to a mound of blankets, laying her on soft cotton sheets and pillows. Careen covered her with several blankets to keep her warm after applying cotton padding between her legs. “Must be ten pounds or so.” Careen gathered the blood-splattered sheet and tossed it into a corner. “She’s a beauty.” Kate rested her head on a pillow while Jason covered the infant. “Ryan,” she said, “Come and see your sister.” Her son crawled onto the blankets and curled next to her hip. She felt the pounding of his heart through his clothes, and when she looked down his pale face, glimmering with tears, leaned over for a first look at his sister. Ryan caressed her gently. Blond waves of wet bloody hair stuck to the infant's scalp, while tiny hands and legs crunched in anger. “I think she's hungry,” he said, relief echoing in his voice. She nestled the baby into his arms and reached for Jason. “Get my head up, Jay. I feel dizzy.” She scooted up with his help and placed her head on a fresh pillow. Ryan settled the baby into the crook of her elbow while she adjusted her breast. A sudden sapping of energy and her fingers wouldn’t work, then her arms went floppy, acting more like gelatin than muscle. She gasped and tried not to startle the baby. The infant heard her voice and turned. Stunned, she gazed into her daughter’s eyes and saw that they were green. Like Noah’s, she thought. Then Lucia’s eyes shifted, turning a darker hue. Kate shuddered. Cold. She was utterly icy cold. She shivered and her skin erupted in goose bumps. She looked away from her daughter and said to Ryan, Jason, and Careen, “Her name is Lucia, Bearer of Light.” A flow of warmth seeped from between her legs and soaked the blankets. She tried to gesture to Careen, but was too weak. Suddenly, she was enormously tired. End excerpt So, if you haven't read Gemini Rising, book one, grab a copy right now.
