Thank you for visiting today! If you can, please click below to share on Facebook or to tweet the blog. My intention to go alphabetically was challenged by my skipping our very own Kinley Baker. For some reason, I had it in my head that I'd already posted her work. Turns out it was still in draft and never made it live. :( That said, Kinley is an extremely talented author and her two books and one novella are definitely worth a Christmas read and/or gift. Biography Kinley read her first romance novel at the age of thirteen and immediately fell in love with the hero. After focusing on nonfiction in high school and college, earning her a degree in creative writing, she returned to her first love and devoured hundreds of romance novels. When they stopped ending the way she wanted, she took the plunge into fiction. Fantasizing about other men didn't sit well with her after meeting her husband, so Kinley now writes happily-ever-afters for others. She lives with her husband and her dog, Joker, in the gloriously rainy Pacific Northwest. As a firm supporter of all supernatural lifestyles, she writes fantasy romance, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy. You can find Kinley at www.kinleybaker.com or on her fantasy and urban fantasy group blog www.castlesandguns.com. She does a great job with this difficult task, introducing multiple characters (without it seeming like too many) and the central short- and long-term conflicts to carry this book and those overarching into the next book, all the while building a fantasy world involving three different cultures and several different "realms." I loved the ways the different cultures clashed due to their histories (though this is not a main focus, but rather an undercurrent that drives the conflict), and the characters come alive with clear goals and consistent motivations. The most impressive aspect of this book is its tight plotting, so that Jessa and Vale's story comes together in a complete arc while other stories are launched and will be answered (it seems) in the next books. (Can't wait for Caleb's story!) The setting is an imaginative mix of old and new--some characters have magical powers, but there are lots of castles, robes, and horses. Fun read! He promises that he and his men, the only survivors of his kingdom, will leave the Shadow women alone until they have proven themselves honorable...Then he finds his ahora, the woman he is to be with. I loved this story, although a work of fiction, exemplifies how different cultures have different ideals and religious beliefs. As in the story, Caleb wanted acceptance and trust from the king and his people. I also enjoyed the love/hate relationship that went on between he and Tabitha. This was a fantastic adventure that drew me in and kept me mesmerized until the very end! Steph Murray is one of Crescent Moon Press' co-founders. But that's not her only job.
