Have you seen the dolphin corpses? Or how about the stories of deep water sharks moving into the coastal waters off Florida? What about the sea turtles, the plankton, the fish gasping for air on the top of the ocean because there's none to be found within the water itself?
Some scientists are reporting the sea floor is actually fragmenting beneath the BOP. If this happens, the entire Gulf coast is in serious trouble. A large pocket of methane is said to lie atop the oil within the reservoir and the reason for the news blackout is that they want to keep as many ships/planes out of the area in case the sea floor cracks enough for the bubble to be released. Once this happens, the gas would shoot out through the gulf, causing a massive Tsunami traveling over 600 miles per hour. Enough power to drench the entire state of Florida. The good news is, there are always doomers. Those that dangle the 'worst case scenerios' in front of our noses to keep us tuned into their blog or website. I, for one, pray the worst doesn't come true. However, the possibility does exist and the longer the spill goes on, the more the riser pipe (the steel tube that links the BOP to the well) will erode. Along with oil and gas from the repository comes sand and rock, working like sandpaper, scraping the steel pipe from its formerly 2 inches round down to 1 inch. That says we have maybe 60 days before the riser is completely gone. I've heard rumors of the 'nuclear option', but it really isn't an option unless you want to add radioactive oil into the equation. If it's true that the BOP is leaning, it is only a matter of time before it breaks away from its moorings. We'll know soon enough if they add anchors to the well. When I wrote Gemini Rising, a Sci-fi, post-apocalyptic novel, it was just for fun. I enjoyed finding creative solutions for the survivors, and imagining what the world would look like if Earth turned on her axis. Gemini won the Reviewers Choice Award from Twolips.com and I was so proud. Problem is, as a writer, I have an active imagination and this oil gusher has me bothered, big time. Google sea bed fractures gulf oil spill, and take a look around. On the other hand, maybe you shouldn't. It might give you nightmares. Google MMS and find out that the person put in charge by the Obama administration was an ex BP executive. From there, follow the links. It's downright scary. I asked some of my friends to comment on the oil spill and here are a few of their responses. Joanne from Grass Valley says: Loggerhead sea turtles were in trouble before the offshore Gulf oil disaster. The number of nesting females has declined by 50 percent in the past decade, leading the National Marine Fisheries Service to consider reclassifying loggerheads from threatened to endangered. But the ongoing Gulf oil disaster near their nesting grounds presents a new and deadly threat to these turtles. Exposure to oil can cause skin loss, poisoning, drowning and death. That is exactly why federal officials need every available tool to help save the lives of individual loggerheads and save this species from extinction. I just encouraged federal officials to approve new protections for loggerheads, and I hope you will too. Take action online at http://dfnd.us/cVr18K Sandy from Alabama says: Save our brown pelicans! They are dying right now, right here, covered in oil. http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=delisted-and-in-danger-gulf-oil-spi-2010-06-08 Becky from Florida says: Sharks and other deep water fish are appearing in shallow waters off our coast. Take a look at this news report. http://www.aolnews.com/gulf-oil-spill/article/oil-spill-may-be-pushing-sharks-toward-florida-beaches/19513408 There are so many stories I can't list them all in this blog. These are just a few things you don't see on the news. As for the other items I wrote about, it just takes a quick Google to find the stories for yourself. Perhaps next week, I can say the spill has stopped. That would be wonderful news for all of us. Then, maybe we can appreciate the things in life we all took for granted. Sometimes that's all that's needed to bring about a change in the human condition.
