I write fiction and with my love of astronomy, geology, and the rest, my active imagination takes me places containing more fiction than fact. For years I wondered what it would be like to live through a reversal of Earth's magnetic fields. I wondered what would happen, how would the weather change, how would longitude and latitude be affected, and how would humanity survive.
I wondered what animal life would overcome the odds and how. With inhospitable living conditions what would people eat? Where would they find shelter? Putting it all together made Gemini Rising come alive and while my novel is about Nibiru making its crossing through our solar system, I think I can almost promise you 2012 will not bring about the end of the world. Last night on CNBC they streamed a show called 2012: The Apocalypse. Most of it was about how people made money on the 'supposed' crisis. I lived through Y2K, hovering over my bank of computers that kept call volume alive for over 300 physicians, nervously poking at keys, waiting, watching, for that moment, that second... Dang! Why didn't I go to Reno? What a waste of time! I flopped into my chair with a hot cup of coffee wondering about the fireworks dancing through the sky in Nevada. According to believers, Nibiru is headed toward Earth. Originally, the catastrophe was due to take place in May 2003, but the date moved to 2012 thanks in part to the Mayan calendar and winter solstice. If you think about it, just because our calendar ends every Dec. 31st that does not mean our world will stops spinning. Instead, a new beginning starts, one shaped with hopes and dreams from the past year, celebrated by our new years revelatory inebriations. Each December the earth and the sun align with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy and there is no reason to expect next year's alignment will prove different. If Nibiru were a real planet it would be visible to the naked eye and scientists would have been tracking it for the last several years. We do have a new planet called Eris, but it is so small there is no gravitational pull on Earth. Now Earth has flipped her poles on occasion, (as a female, I can relate) but generally it's about every 400,000 years. So, suggesting a reversal is impossible may be a bit misguided. Will Earth flip during 2012? I have no idea, and neither does anyone else. The earth has shaken off comets and asteroids, though I'm not sure if the dinosaurs enjoyed the process. A piece of space junk could drop in for a visit, but again, you can't predict such things. There is also the rumor about solar storms. Solar activity peaks every eleven or so years and yes there can be interruptions with satellite communications. I remember in the late eighties or early nineties we lost all pager service across North America. One of the satellites handing communications was struck by a solar flare. It took about 12 hours or so and all service was restored. So, take Gemini Rising for what it is, a fictional account of a fictional planet named Nibiru that travels through our solar system turning Earth's axis on its head. Put away the freeze-dried food and bring out the chocolate. Hang out with Kate Kelly as she adjusts to her new world, a new lover, and a new life, complete with a new beginning for mankind. Enjoy the ride! 7/11/2011 04:12:22 pm
