For the last ten months I've been on Remicade, which is a type of chemo that's used to beat my immune system into submission. I've been really lucky with minimal side effects. Until week before last when my skin tried to revolt, leaving me with a rash I thought only aliens capable of producing. I mean, seriously. After a trip into my doctor's office, an injection of steroids, and a you'll be better in 24 hours, I went home and yes the rash diminished in 24 hours, but unfortunately it never went away. Then, Sunday, I developed a full Crohn's flare, which means I'm sicker than a dog. All this preceding a pre-order on The Light and the Flame on the 22nd. Damn! I immediately went on my special diet hoping to quiet things, but so far, I've not been lucky there either. I am, however, grateful for the last ten months. I didn't think it was possible to feel human again and I did. I would have given anything thing for that. My next treatment is on the 29th and I don't feel bad admitting I'm scared to death. My GI thinks it's okay to go ahead while my regular doctor is convinced the stuff will kill me. I dunno. Maybe that's why I write apocalyptic, dystopian novels. All that said, the Gemini series is not just about the end of the world. Both books are a message of hope and renewal. They are about men and women growing while facing horrific odds. The novels are about our ability as a species to survive in any condition. That human beings are adaptable when faced with overwhelming challenges. That life goes on even in the midst of chaos.
