Our universe is wonderfully complex. We wonder, why are were here? Where did we come from?
String theory is the most recent attempt to explain who we are. As we all know, we are made up of atoms which include electrons, neutrons, and protons. Quarks make up the most elementary particles. Quarks are the most basic building blocks and have wonderous names: up, down, charm, strange, bottom, and top. Oh, and we should not forget the leptons.
The 4 fundamental forces of nature are gravity, electromagnetics, and weak and strong nuclear forces made up of photons and gravitons and of course, we must not forget the gluons and the weak forces Ws and Z.
String theory is the most promising candidate for unification of all the forces and is called by some, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.
Basically, if string theory is correct, then when observed by the strongest microscope we should be able to see that ALL these elements are strings, tiny little looped strings that can mimic every particle.
What does this mean for writers of science fiction?
Part of it means that we change the very thing we look at just by our observation and that, in a sense, means we create our own reality. It also means, that everything you can imagine or think of can be created anywhere in the universe. Strings are fully capable of creating your very thought! What you think of can be created in this reality or in another reality all living within a multi-dimensional universe. Every possible consequence is acted out if not through you, then through another you in another dimension.
Mind-boggling isn't it?
So let go and have fun. Make your universes and realities as imaginative as possible. Just make sure that each universe acts under its own laws.
