NightFox 5.0 out of 5 starsPoignant and Compelling Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2015Innocent Blood is a tale of drug abuse, corruption, devastation, and prophecy from the point of view of the addicts, victims, a mother, a cop, and a detective.
The novel offers a harsh and realistic look into the world of drug abuse and corruption. The story takes place in California and mainly focuses on Danny Fisk, a meth addict who also happens to have psychic abilities, and the people closest to him. Danny is friends with a narc named Sayed who runs drugs for an atrocious police officer, but the entanglement between drug traffickers, the justice system, narcs, and unsuspecting teenagers goes much deeper than that. I found parts of this book to be quite staggering, but also fascinating, and sadly realistic.
There are many different levels of anguish in this novel and I think the author did an excellent job expressing the emotions and experiences of the different characters involved. Innocent Blood is well written and well edited. It’s heart wrenching and interesting. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who likes realistic drama, has experience with drug abuse, or likes stories told from different perspectives. Overall - a great novel. I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.
Nancy Segovia - New York Times Bestselling Author 4.0 out of 5 starsDifferent, but interesting Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2015I have to say that, from the title, I was expecting something different from this book. In all honesty, I thought it was going to be about vampires, but that’s not even close. It does have some paranormal activity within the story. Or, you might call it spiritual, depending upon your point of view.
This is an interesting read with a genuinely intriguing main character and some supporting characters that you really want to see succeed. Danny Fisk hears from God, and his is also a meth addict. However, he is a meth addict with a purpose only he is not really sure what that purpose is, and neither is his family. His parents support his efforts to get clean and stay clean, but his messages from God seem to demand that he return to the drug scene. He loses everything, but that doesn’t stop him from following his calling. A calling that leads him into a deadly trap.
The writing in this book is very good, and it will keep you up late at night turning pages. However, it could use a little editing especially in the areas of the proper use of possessive apostrophes. There were also a lot of flashbacks in the first 20% of the book that really slowed the story down. I think the information could have been woven into the story later in the book and it would have had more of an opening hook.
Also, personally, I did not like one of the main characters, i.e. Danny’s mother. I can understand hiding paranormal gifts from the rest of the world because people would not understand them and/or be afraid of them. What I could not understand about Danny’s mother is the fact that she refused to share her experience and knowledge of these gifts with her child as she watched her son suffer from them to the point that he turns to meth to escape their torture. She never offers him any help until it is almost too late. I am sorry. I could not believe that any parent would let their child suffer in such a way when they had the means to help their child.
This fact and the flashbacks really spoiled my pleasure in what was otherwise a great story.
Dani 5.0 out of 5 starsAddictive Read Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2015Danny Fisk has a lot of problems, but the biggest by far is his drug addiction. But, this time it is different. He honestly believes that God has given him a quest- to become the Pope on Dope. He must help save other addicts from a corrupt system. However, Danny is about to be thrown a curveball. Things are not what they seem.
Caroll has given us the insight into the mind of an addict complete with betrayal, loss, brain fog, and ultimately, redemption. Now, the story does start slow, but trust me, keep going. You won’t be disappointed.
