Audiobooks, like Audible, are transforming how people engage with books. They make literature more accessible and convenient, but I think they may have a detrimental effect on the process of reading itself if not carefully monitored.
My granddaughter (15) has a voracious appetite for reading. Much like me, the kid can put down a full-length novel in a day or two. Her parents have elected not to introduce her to audiobooks just yet because they want her vocabulary to have a firm foundation. However, that day is fast approaching. From a writer's point of view, I have decided to place my children's books on Audible, though I feel guilty. However, kids need access to books in all forms, and while I love sitting and reading to my grandchildren, sometimes it is fun to put on a book we both can listen to. The process from page to voice over has been a fabulous experience. The narrators are top quality, the price not terrible, and it is fun to watch my characters literally come to life. The flexibility allows people/kids to listen to books while commuting, exercising, and, like me, going to sleep. However, I cannot do Stephen King at night. I had some bad nightmares. I love storytelling. Just ask my friends. I love to listen to their stories. I can listen for hours. Listening to books while driving has been a life saver. Interestingly, I did find that some studies demonstrate listeners are showing improved concentration on spoken content which is great for conflict resolution. The same is true for children so I am torn, understanding the need to get grounded in spelling, reading, and comprehension, and audiobooks. Fortunately, I can't see kids getting the same pleasure out of academic material or even information rich nonfiction. After my research and thoughtful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that audiobooks are not cheating or lessor forms of reading like I initially thought. They are different roads to a somewhat same end. Improving the love of storytelling. Even families can sit around and listen together, making it a great way to connect with kids. My sense of guilt has vanished.
